The Empowered Estate: A new approach to end-of-life planning

When I became a funeral director 15 years ago I wanted to help families navigate the loss of a loved one. Since then I’ve met with hundreds of families. While I was able to assist them with the care of their deceased loved one, I started to notice where there were gaps in what I was able to do. One thing I know for sure is that most families are not talking to each other about end-of-life planning, even when death is expected due to illness or advanced age.

I believe in sharing accurate and transparent information and am passionate about honest conversations. This often helps people feel more in control at a time when control is out of their hands. Slowing down, explaining what I’m doing and why, and giving families a sense of what to expect builds the foundation for the services I offer.

Meet my co-creator: Shelley Essery

In October of 2023 I met my future business partner, Shelley Essery at an Empowered Women in Business meeting. She told me about the custom engraving home business she owns with her husband Brent. For Love Engraving even does memorial engraving specialized for loved ones and pets.
What really impresses me about Shelley is her experience in the legal realm as an administrator specializing in Wills and Estates as well as Real Estate. Shelley has a warm, heart-centered approach to sharing information and I love how she can explain complicated (and sometimes overwhelming) concepts with clarity and ease. Also, Shelley is passionate about supporting Executors in the sometimes complex and lengthy process of settling an estate.

The Empowered Estate is our labour of love! It combines Shelley’s experience with Wills and Estate along with my experience as a funeral director and death doula.
